Fusion Art Fair 2025
I thought, as I'd done several exhibitions before, that I would know how to present myself at my first ever curated art fair, but the experience was very different to events such as The Game Fair and The National Equine Show.
The show was quieter than I had hoped, but I still sold an original piece to a wonderful new collector and sold one of my new horseshoe prints. I've learnt that lowering my prices does not necessarily lead to sales and in fact might put people off from buying. It is really hard to price, as you can never seem to please anybody. Going forward I am going to really work out my profit margins of a piece of art and stick to my guns about the prices, not dropping the price of originals and not expecting them to sell straight away.
As well as exhibiting, I also had a workshop where I talked people through the process of drawing a horse eye. This was a lovely experience and it was great to chat to people about colour pencil.
The best thing about the experience was meeting other artists and being able to talk business with people in the same position. Being an artist is super lonely (something I really had not considered when going full time) and whenever I have a business decision to make, I struggle to process my thoughts because I never have anyone to bounce ideas off.
This fair was my first insight into the fine art world, and it very much differed from trade events I go to, mainly down to people's reasons for being there. Going forward, whenever I create original pieces I will be setting them at a higher price point and will not feel the need to drop my prices, but keep any homewares designs separate from these pieces. I hope by doing this I will be able to continue selling in all areas of my art business without devaluing any originals I create by using them on homewares.
Art businesses are so much more tricky than I ever first thought, I am learning a huge amount in my time as a full time artist and know that every experience is a lesson.
I hope you enjoyed reading this little blog, please drop me a comment if you did.
